Makira Island, Solomon Islands
Makira Province

john

Makira Island is located in the eastern Solomons. There is a mountain range running down the centre of the island. Makira has more inland swamps and crocodiles than any other island in the Solomons. It is the most easterly of the main islands in the archipelago.

The island covers an area of almost 3100 sq km.

The provincial headquarters are located at Kirakira. The harbour at Kirakira is considered the best in the Solomon islands. Ngorangora is a grass airstrip, where flights refuel on their way to Santa Cruz Island. Lapita people settled Makira island 1400 years ago. There is evidence of survivors from Mendana's 1595 expedition landing at Pamua on Makira's north coast. Spanish pottery was located in the area.

Sub provincial headquarters are located at Star Harbour (Na Mugha) on the eastern end of Makira. At Ghoroweni Point there are two caves.
