Most of the population lives on the southern coast. Munda is the largest settlement on the island, located in the NW. The island was the last main area to be geologically mapped in the Solomons.

The island group consists of a complex of volcanic rocks and coral reef debris. The coastal areas are mainly swamp, with old volcanic craters inland (Mase and Mahimba). The SE coast of the island borders on Marovo Lagoon. The summit elevation is Mt Mase (843m). Most villages are located on the south coast.

At Mt Bau, inland from Munda, there is are stone monuments which represent ancestors of the locals. Holupuru falls are located near Munda. Close to Munda several of the shipwrecks are good dive sites. Seghe is a main town on the SE coast of New Georgia. There is an aircraft in shallow water off the end of the airfield.
