Isabel Province

john

Santa Isabel is the longest island in the Solomons. It is 200 km long and 30 km wide. A large part of the island is sparcely populated. The island has the most varied geology in the Solomon Islands and contains a large thrust fault.

The island consists of a single chain of volcanic mountains which dips gently to a low lying coastal strip.

Santa Isabel was first sighted by European explorers in 1568. The island contains deposits of minerals which have not yet been developed. The province is home to the endemic thinking rat. It weighs one kg and sits in trees and eats nuts and fruit.

There are stories of a pygmy tribe who lived in the mountains, but died out after WWII.
